Welcome Way: Retro, Charming Getaway in Coloma, Michigan

10/27/2025

When I saw Welcome Way, a delightful renovated vintage motel in Coloma, Michigan, I thought it was cute, charming, and great for a small family that wants to get away on a budget. It’s an adorable retro motel that has been turned into 3 condos. It has a central location with easy access to beaches, wineries, golf courses, and more.

Vintage Charm + Modern Touches

From the moment you step into Welcome Way, you’ll be enchanted by its cozy and retro-kitsch ambiance. This beautifully renovated vintage motel blends nostalgic charm with contemporary amenities.

Location

I also found it extremely hard to believe about Lake Michigan initially: It seems like the ocean? But it does. It’s a wide, open water where you can’t see land on the other side. It has huge sandy, rocky beaches. The water is definitely natural lake water, but floating there with a coffee in your hand on a sunny morning is just as lovely. Also, one good thing about lakes: small waves that are perfect for floating on.

Tip: Just 5 minutes, or less, from Welcome Way is Hagar Park. It has a park, a free parking lot, and a wooden staircase down to the sandy beach on Lake Michigan. There are also restrooms. Very convenient for travelers with kids, or not. Some days it was busy, some days it was nearly empty.

Public Beaches: There happens to be two beaches just one mile or less mile away, four in St. Joseph, two in Benton Harbor, and two in South Haven. Each beach offers a different experience. Some are for swimming, some are for boating, and some are for fishing! Always make sure first, in case you are looking for a sandy beach!

Wineries and Breweries: Explore the local vineyards and breweries for some delightful tastings and tours. Small, local wineries and breweries are my favorites to try. I always enjoy taking home some local goods and products for friends to try.

Golfing: Just a 10-minute drive away is the renowned Harbor Shores golf course. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a round of golf amidst stunning landscapes and lush greens.

Shopping and Antiquing: Discover hidden treasures and unique finds at the local shops and antique stores. I love places like this for antiquing and thrift shopping! You never know what kind of amazing retro accent you’ll find for your home.

Fruit Picking: Embrace the charm of local farms and orchards by going fruit picking. It’s a cute (tasty) way to spend a day.

Lighthouses: My mom really loved getting a polaroid of every lighthouse in Michigan on one of our family vacations. At the time, I was kind of annoyed about all the driving, but now I think it was a cute idea.

Coastal Towns: There are some really fun coastal towns on Lake Michigan to take day drives to! Saugatuck is lovely for a stroll on the lake, boating, beaches, and a charming town. There are tons of shops, restaurants, and parks. There are also other charming coastal towns such as Grand Haven, South Haven, Holland, Traverse City, Mackinac Island, and Petoskey.
